What is a table runner and how can It enhance your table?

A table runner is a long, narrow strip of fabric that is placed in the center of the table. It can be used on its own or combined with a tablecloth to create contrasts, color schemes, and depth. Table runners are both practical and decorative. On the one hand, they add character to the table setting, and on the other, they protect the table surface from hot dishes, vases, candles, or stains. In addition, table runners are very easy to care for as they can be folded and washed with ease. Table runners appeal to those who seek quality furnishings and pay attention to the small details that make a difference.

How to choose the right size table runner?

Choosing the right table runner size is key to creating a well-balanced and visually pleasing table setting. The rule is simple: the runner should be proportionate to the tabletop, with a slight overhang on both ends to add a sense of harmony.

As a general guideline, aim for a runner that measures about one-third the width of your table. For example, if your table is 90 cm (35″) wide, a runner that’s 30 cm (12″) wide will look balanced and elegant. When it comes to length, it’s recommended to allow for an overhang of 15–30 cm (6″–12″) on each end. This creates a soft, flowing effect that enhances the overall look of your table. Below is a size guide based on the most common table dimensions.
